The Eureka Garages and Sheds Series will return to Geelong’s Avalon Raceway this Saturday night (December 5) for the first of two rounds in December. The third round of the Eureka Garages and Sheds Series was washed out moments after hot laps were completed last Saturday night at Warrnambool’s Sungold Stadium, with each team having to clean their cars and re tune in readiness for the fourth round this weekend. Saturday night will also double as the Fireball Derby, an event which continues to attract Victoria’s best drivers and neighboring interstate competitors in memory of Bill Evans. Leading the local charge is Eureka Series leader Mike Van Bremen. ‘The Flying Dutchman’ will strap into the drivers seat at Avalon for the first time in his career knowing he is a feature race winner at the venue, courtesy of his first round win, his first at the Lara complex in his 15th season. Joining Van Bremen as leading Victorian drivers will be defending Eureka Garages and Sheds Series champion and Victorian title holder Matthew Reed aboard the Matt Eastham owned V88. Reed stormed home for a fast finishing second behind Van Bremen in the first round at Avalon Raceway this season. In the two rounds held this season, finishing in third place has been John Vogels from Simpson. The consistent efforts has Vogels poised in second place on the points table and along with Mt Gambier round winner Brett Milburn, both are ready to swoop on the series lead before Christmas. Bacchus Marsh driver Charles Hunter has started the season in career best form, with the Eureka Series regular well-established in the top five. In the two A-Main events this season, Hunter has passed a total of 11 cars, including nine in the second round at Mt Gambier. The strong form has Hunter leading the JOHN SIDNEY RACING most cars passed in A-Main end of series award, something the 27-year-old is satisfied with. “We want to start closer to the front in the finals, which we are not far away from doing. The crew has got the setup pretty well right for the finals, which shows with the ground we are making up. It also helps to stay out of trouble, hopefully on Saturday we can start closer to the front and pass some cars too,” says Hunter. Other Victorian regulars set to contest the two rounds of heats, B-Main, top six time trial and 30-lap final will be Ballarat’s Rod Matthews, Warrnambool livewire Jamie Veal, Geelong’s Domain Ramsay and youngster Nick Lacey. The interstate line up for Saturday night includes New South Wales driver Eddie Lumbar. Travelling from Deniliquin each week, Lumbar has been rewarded with a current fifth place in the Eureka Series, while showing ample car speed each time he accepts the green flag. South Australia will have a strong presence, with Jamie Stark, Glen Sutherland and Steven Lines, driving for Victorian car owner David Challons, all capable of being major players in the impressive field.
