Bordertown’s Dylan Jenkin recorded his first major feature race win of his five year career at Horsham’s Blue Ribbon Raceway last night (January 9) in the sixth round of the Eureka Garages and Sheds Sprintcar Series after starting off the front row along side series leader and race favourite John Vogels.
After two rounds of qualifying heat races, Vogels was in stunning form winning his two heat races in resounding style with some brave passing moves and fast lap times on a slick race track in oppressive 40 plus degree weather.
Vogels cemented his favouritism for the A-Main event after setting quick time in the top six shootout ahead of Jenkin. Former V8 Dirt Modified superstar Tim Morse had his best run in a Sprintcar, being second highest on points after heat racing and setting the third quickest time ahead of Jamie Veal, Brett Milburn and Charles Hunter.
The A-Main, reduced to 25 laps in trying conditions, saw Jenkin get the ideal jump from position two, while Vogels lost ground and found himself in fourth position after the first lap.
In the non stop event, Jenkin controlled the tempo of the race, showing smartness weaving his way through lapped traffic and keeping Veal and Morse at bay. Vogels continued his fight back, getting passed Morse in a bid to secure another podium result.
Jenkin continued to show a cool head on his way to the win ahead of Veal and Vogels, while fellow South Australian Glen Sutherland continued his excellent run at Horsham in the last two years to finish fourth ahead of Milburn.
25-year-old Jenkin was quickly on the phone to relatives and friends informing them of the news, while also taking some deep breaths in the difficult conditions.
“It was a pretty tough race being dry and slick, it was hard work. It’s a career best result for me; I’ve been in a lean patch so now there is a bit of weight off my shoulders.
“Starting from second in the first heat and winning it I knew there would be a good chance of getting the jump on the start. The car was quick in a straight line so it was just a case of getting the grip and going. To win a round of the Eureka Sprintcar Series is sensational,” Jenkin said.
Second placed Veal was happy with the result as he placed himself in a good position for the second half of the season, while Vogels extended the Eureka Garages and Sheds Series lead to 158 points, but admitted he should have elected to start from position two.
Finishing in sixth place was Morse, ahead of Domain Ramsay, Hunter, Ashley Bourke, Craig Vanderstelt and Rod Matthews. Finishing in 12th position and the winner of the B-Main was second placed in the series Mike Van Bremen in a difficult night ahead of David Aldersley, Ryan Davis, Brad Foster, Chris Solomon, Ron Dalton and 18th car across the line Phil Lock.
Earlier in the night six qualifying heat races were run with wins going to Vogels (2), Jenkin, Milburn, Veal and Ramsay. One of the main stories to come out of heat racing was the early loss of Deniliquin’s Eddie Lumbar, a KTM top ten contender. Lumbar was pushed into the turn one and two wall heavily which ended his night prematurely.
The team now has a week to prepare for the seventh round of the Eureka Garages and Sheds Series which will be held on their home track at Moama’s Heartland Raceway this Saturday night, January 16.
