Hamilton's Western Speedway is gearing up for a Anzac Day Sprintcar feast when the inaugural SRA 360 Gold Cup is held this Sunday night (April 25) with over 20 cars nominated to officially end season 2009-2010. Timboon's Phil Lock will be one of the leading drivers nearing the end of a career best season behind a Sprintcar.
Lock has been in stunning form and marked himself down as one of the best 360 drivers in the country, winning the Victorian Championship on his home track Simpson Speedway, finishing fourth in the Australian Title at Murray Bridge and completing the season long All Star series in third position.
Mount Gambier’s Karl Enderl will head the nomination list from over the borders. Enderl has been in similar form to Lock, winning multiple A-Main events this season, while doing well in races such as the Australian 360 Nationals and South Australian 360 title. The end of the season always presents an excellent opportunity for rookie drivers to announce themselves, with James McDonald and Jessica Moulden two drivers well poised to impress as new drivers to the Sprintcar ranks. McDonald has been a regular 360 racer this season and with Ian 'The Fly' Lewis in his corner he has showed positive improvement.
McDonald's last outing at Ballarat's Redline Speedway in late March was a frustrating night when he was caught out in incidents, but with a handful of weeks to re group the rookie will look to finish the season on a high. Moulden has the potential to make a name for herself in Sprintcar racing after a strong career in Formula 500s and Junior Sedans with plenty of success.
In recent years, Moulden has been one of the leading Formula 500 racers in the country and going by previous drivers that have been successful in the pocket rocket class and made the transition to Sprintcars, Moulden is well positioned to make a successful move.
Drouin based driver Brad Foster has been a key player throughout the season with some sturdy results, but an A-Main feature race win eludes the elbows up style driver.
Foster has showed pace on most occasions he has hit the track this season, including contesting open events in his 360 car. On a fast Western Speedway, Foster will be suited for the Gold Cup.
The Solomon boys are two of the most supportive 360 racers in Victoria. The Gisborne based brothers, Chris and Paul, are regulars in the All Star series and have showed plenty of ability throughout the season to be contenders for the SRA Gold Cup.
Broken Hill’s Josh Ruhs, former open competitor Adrian Parr, lady racer Kate Searle, former VSC Sprintcar driver Michael Phillips and well known 360 regulars Bill Fraser, Barry Rogers, local hero Gavin Taylor and Bendigo’s Ron Donaldson are among the list of drivers for the Gold Cup this Sunday night. A late nomination is past Australian 360 Champion, hard charger Tony Moule and you are sure to see some of the best 360 competition to be conducted in the country this Sunday night.
The Sprintcar action is looking get under way around 5pm, also on the racing card is the running of the Victoria Junior Sedan Championship which will start there heat racing a little earlier.
